The final special make-ups as part of our 5 Year Anniversary Collection have arrived. Two exclusives using leathers from Maryam Tannery in Italy – the Col. 1071 Waxed Horsebutt on 2030 last and the Black (Nero) Waxed Horsebutt on 2040 last. These Viberg for Withered Fig special make-ups will release on Friday, July 21st at Noon EST in the noted size runs in each section below.
As with a few of the leathers we used as part of the 5 Year Anniversary collection, these two are some remaining remnants from Viberg’s archive stock, making this release another very limited run and also less likely to be restocked in the future.
Col. 1071 Waxed Horsebutt Service Boot (2030)
For the Viberg Col. 1071 Waxed Horsebutt Service Boot, this is an entirely new make-up that should appeal to a wide range of desiring feet. The “Color 1071” can be found on a few other leathers, calf and other horsebutts predominantly, with this one simply being the waxed version of their Color 1071 Horsebutt leather (as seen here).

This leather is commonly observed in the wild to transition between grey and brown, depending on the lighting, time of day, angle of shot, and so on. From the pairs we’ve pulled for a sampling, this lot has a good amount of natural scarring, variations, and striations throughout. Not all will have the much-desired striations on the quarters, but some do. Like most horsebutt from Maryam, the leather has a good thickness yet maintains a good pliability.
We’ve paired the leather with a slightly tonal accent tongue using a Black Chromexcel leather and 8x AA antique brass eyelets. The brogue cap toe is pinked-out (pinking) to add some additional details to an otherwise pretty standard Service Boot composition. The outsole is finished with our preferred hard rubber sole, the Ridgeway sole, which is probably considered a bit more casual and rugged looking than the more oft seen Dainite sole.
Sizing: These are pretty standard 2030 Service Boot sizing. We recommend taking one size down from your Brannock size in almost all cases, but if you already own a pair of Viberg Service Boots and take a different size, you’ll know best. If you need to double check sizing with us with reference sizes from other brands, feel free to email us.
Black (Nero) Waxed Horsebutt Service Boot (2040)
This Black Waxed Horsebutt is our pseudo-restock of the previous Black Waxed Horsebutt Service Boot that we released in 2022, albeit with some modifications. The two major changes are going from a 2030 EE almond-toe shaped last to the 2040 E anatomical last, and the change in eyelets from a mix of eyelets and speed hooks, to a full set of 9x gunmetal black eyelets.
- Available in sizes 7-11.5
- Viberg for Withered Fig Exclusive
- Black (Nero) Waxed Horsebutt – smooth (Maryam, Italy)
- 2040 last (E width)
- Ridgeway sole
- Standard set-in tongue
- Self-tongue
- Brogue cap toe
- 9x #2 gunmetal black eyelets
- Partially structured toe
- Natural leather midsole
- Stitchdown construction
- Includes a two pairs of black flat waxed laces
- Includes Viberg Dust Bags
Similar to the original make-up, the leather is quite matte in appearance and with a lot of natural scarring and blemishes. It gives this a natural vintage look as if you pulled this pair from your grandpa’s attic. This is in contrast to something like a Viberg Black Chromexcel Service Boot that is much more consistent in terms of the scarring and blemishes, and which has a bit more sheen and shine to it.
Less noticeable yet still notable is the change in the sole stitch from a black stitch to a natural colored sole stitch (seen on most Vibergs). In our opinion, this also gives it a more vintage feel than with a black stitch that might give it more of that sleek modern black boot look.
Sizing: With the Viberg 2040 last, we recommend the same sizing as other Viberg Service Boots on the 2030/1035 last – taking one size down from your Brannock size. As a secondary check, if you already own a pair of well–fitting 2030/1035 Service Boots, you can likely take the same size. That said, because of the anatomical last of the 2040, the waist and heel of the boot are narrower. If your feet happen to be wide in the waist or heels, this anatomical last might not suit you well. For those with somewhat normal feet but just have a wide forefoot, you may come to find the 2040 last to be your favorite with its anatomical features.
Both Viberg Service Boots in 1071 Waxed Horsebutt and Black Waxed Horsebutt will retail for $820 and $860 respectively. The two pairs will release on Friday, July 21st at Noon EST on Withered Fig. Shop our Viberg collection here.
